Erykah Badu - the new face of Givenchy

Neon Models has learned that Riccardo Tisci, the creative director of Givenchy, has described the singer / actress / model as his ‘dream icon’ and put her at the front of the fashion house’s new campaign.

With race a central debate in the fashion industry at the moment, with non-whites being under-represented in relation to their proportion of society, in all areas from to modelling and design to cultural fashion influences, the appointment of Badu is being praised widely.

Tisci has long been in favour of diversity in his shows, and Badu’s clear association with African American identity, with her signature colourful headwraps and proud afro hair further supports this aim.

Badu’s career was launched back in 1997 with her debut album Baduizm, which enjoyed both critical and popular success.
In her youth, Badu changed the spelling of her first name from Erica to Erykah, because she said she believed her original name was a ‘slave’ name and the term ‘kah’ signifies her inner self.

Givenchy is one of the longest established Paris fashion houses and is known for blazing a trail into diversity and modernity, being the first label to feature a transsexual model in 2010.

Beyonce’s New Surprise Album

Throwing of the traditional methods of whetting fans’ appetites for months and ‘leaking’ tracks before the official launch date in order to whip up a frenzy of anticipation, Beyonce released her fifth album this week with no build up whatsoever.

Check out the neon models website here.

The album has been released exclusively on itunes and is the singer’s first ‘visual’ album, including 17 videos shot everywhere from a hotel lobby to a theme park to a candle lit dinner party.

The album sold over 68,000 copies within two days of its release and is set to break music sales records. She has already been listed in Time magazine as one of the 10 most influential people in the world, and is one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Beyonce has enjoyed a successful musical and modelling career lasting over a decade so far, that seems to be going from strength to strength. She began entering singing and dancing competitions as a child, and first become known as part of the girl pop group Destiny’s Child.

The new album contains a huge 31 songs, including 14 brand new tracks and features collaborations with her husband, Jay Z, Drake, Frank Ocean and even her one year old daughter Blue Ivy.

Candice Swanepoel – More than just a pretty face

Candice Swanepoel was the lucky model chosen for the prestigious fashion honour of wearing the $10 million Fantasy Bra at this Year’s sumptuous Victoria’s Secret show, which featured extravagant outfits and sets to die for.

At 25, Candice has already featured in Forbe’s top earning models list, and no wonder with her success as Victoria’s Secret Angel (a job that has been known to launch many successful modelling careers) on top of being a catwalk favourite of everyone from Chanel to Jean Paul Gautier to Stella McCartner and Donna Karan.

But Swanepoel insists that there’s much more to being a model than just your physical assets. She points out that there are plenty of pretty girls out there, and to make it in the cut throat fashion industry you have to have a lot more, and be a ‘smart businesswoman’.

It’s true, many famous supermodels have gone on to launch brands of products in all kinds of areas, including fragrances, beauty products, property, books and lingerie.

She laughs off the stereotype of models not being very bright “WE have grown a thick skin,” she says.
